What does it take to be the world’s top-selling automaker? You have to be able to sell nearly 10 million vehicles a year worldwide. Sounds like a big feat, but for the second year in a row, Toyota has secured that top spot. It sold 9.98 million vehicles in 2013, an increase of 2.4 percent over 2012 sales.
However, right in Toyota’s wake are both General Motors and Volkswagen, which sold 9.71 million and 9.5 million vehicles, respectively.
General Motors had been the reigning world champion for seven decades before Toyota first took the crown in 2008. Then GM and Toyota took turns with the title for a few years. In order to keep this title, Toyota gave itself a goal of 10.32 million vehicle sales for 2014. If it reaches this goal, it will be the first automaker to crest the 10 million mark for total sales in one year.
