It’s the end of an era. According to roadandtrack.com, the FJ Cruiser will be discontinued following the 2014 model year. The company’s final orders were due in June of this year. The FJ Cruiser was a beast of an off-roading machine and boasted a unique style that appealed to a new generation of adventure-seekers.
The FJ Cruiser was first launched in 2006 as a 2007 model year, and besides small updates, never saw a major overhaul. Off-roading communities nation-wide embraced the FJ Cruiser, which was based off of Toyota’s earlier FJ40 which existed from the 1960s to 1984. The FJ Cruiser was designed to be an off-road capable SUV with a unique retro design, and we’d say Toyota got it right.
2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser Specifications
Not coincidentally, the announcement of the demise of the FJ-Cruiser came on the heels of Toyota’s US boss, Bill Fay, reaffirming the company’s commitment to body-on-frame trucks in late July last year. It’s not yet clear what we can expect (if anything) to replace the beloved FJ Cruiser, but we’ll keep our ears peeled.
