It seems everyone has an opinion on Toyota’s recent fuel-cell initiative. On one side, many in the automotive community and beyond are lauding Toyota’s trailblazing efforts. On the other hand, you have Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, who said back in October 2013 that he thought hydrogen fuel-cell technology was “bull****.”
You have to take that with a grain of salt. After all, it’s coming from a guy who has decidedly pushed all his chips in in support of electric vehicles.
In a show of class and humor, Toyota created a marketing spot that shows how viable hydrogen is as an energy source. It’s called, “Fueled By Bullsh*t | Presented By Toyota Mirai,” and in it we see Toyota engineer Scott Blanchet visiting a dairy farmer to obtain a truckload of, well, to put it gently, cow waste.
He then extracts hydrogen from the waste (because, as the spot reminds us, hydrogen is in “almost everything”). Next thing you know, he’s fueling up a Toyota Mirai with the hydrogen and hops in to take ride with the dairy farmer.
In other words, Elon Musk was right!
